MINUTES
In attendance: Nicole Buchanan, Peggy McDaniel, Cristen Witte, Jeff McQuistan, Geraldine Erickson, Patty Finney, Dennis Radford (via telephone).

Discussion was had concerning a logo for ESU 17. This logo would be used on materials presented by the ESU.

  • (Dennis) Report on Application, Oct 12, 2010 ESU 17 Board Meeting
    • All factual information was presented to the board. They didn't automatically okay this and had some questions. Funding and time of staff were the basis of these questions. After discussion they agreed to move forward with AdvanEd accreditation. It was unanimous decision.
    • Dennis sent the application to AdvancEd and it was accepted.
  • Freida's response regarding purpose/usage of Readiness Survey
    • The method of collecting/compiling results can be done in a manner that is most meaningful to you. Some forms are simply completed by putting an X in the box most agree with. On others, I see the number of ‘votes’ that were collected for column 1, column 2, 3, and 4 . The choice is ours, but the team will ask who was involved in the collection, how interpretation was made, etc.
  • Accreditation Handbook - resource for NCA Accreditation Preparation
    • An expectation for boards to be involved in the accreditation process. Dennis reported that there would most likely be an interest by some board members to be involved. Jeff expressed that this would not have to be a regular attendance, but having some board members present at a few meetings would be a good idea.
    • January 11th 2011 in Valentine at Media Center board members will be holding their annual meeting in Valentine. Cristen will present information concerning where we are at with the accreditation process to the ESU 17 board.
  • (Jeff) Readiness Assessment Survey Results (Leadership Team) - identify trend
    • This survey seemed to lean towards student achievement and how the ESU is working with schools for this purpose.
    • Staff will be asked to complete survey and current results obtained from the leadership team will be saved and we will not have to retake the survey.
    • NECESSARY CONDITIONS
      • Sometimes we have a high need for placement into a position with a low number of applicants and someone maybe hired with the intent to help them grow into the professional the ESU would like to see. An understanding of what the ESU's vision is necessary to answer this question accurately. Also, some employees take advantage of professional growth and some do not. In some cases, individuals are working toward a higher level of education and have to take part in professional development.
    • THE AGENCY EXPECTS AND ENSURES DESIRED RESULTS BY
      • Good information is provided under the text of question 23.
      • Identifying the goals that we need may not include awareness. We are beyond awareness and need to be looking at the expectations and our focus should move toward this direction.
    • THE AGENCY EFFECTIVELY MONITORS PERFORMANCE BY
      • · The ESU has done surveys to determine the needs of districts and what trainings to hold. SPED has done interim surveys to determine needs of students in this area.
    • THE AGENCY SUPPORTS STUDENT LEARNING BY
      • With the MAP assessment we are all emerging. All districts in the ESU are using the MAP Assessment. All ESU employees may not be aware of the MAP Assessment.
      • Do we need more clarification on Question #3?
    • THE AGENCY SUPPORTS STUDENT LEARNING BY
      • Some questions maybe answered differently by staff members that work directly with children and families. Those working with students on IEP's work more directly with families than other staff members.
    • THE AGENCY MAXIMIZES TEACHER EFFECTIVENESS BY
      • Thinking as an itinerant staff member or the use of ANGEL.
    • Other questions were reviewed and no need for clarification was found.
    • Jeff will send survey to all ESU staff members the beginning of next week with a reminder email two weeks later. Leadership team members that have already taken the survey can ignore these emails when they come. Background information will be sent out with this survey for staff understanding for the purpose and importance

  • January 4th All Staff Meeting
    • Self-Assessment
      • staff complete (prior to January 4 so that discussion can take place at the meeting?)
      • Stakeholders
        • school district superintendents and principals:
          • Jeff will give superintendents a hard copy to take the survey at the next advisory council meeting to prepare them for taking the online survey. Principals will be sent an email with questions and then will take the survey online.
        • ESU board members
          • Board members will be given hard copies of the survey at their January meeting to prepare them for taking the online survey.
    • AdvancED Indicators Survey will benefit staff members in promoting awareness of NCA accreditation and meaning. All staff will be asked to take this survey also.
    • Vision and Purpose
      • This is Standard 1 and a good place to start talking about action plans. We can print out vision vs. mission statements and break into groups to discuss. This will start the process along with the understanding from the survey questions that were asked.
      • what implications do the Self-Assessment and Indicator Survey results have for Vision and Purpose?
    • 2010 CIP Survey Results

  • ESU Nebraska Coop/ESU #17 Coop attendance at Jan 4 2010 all-staff meeting
    • Coop staff employed by ESU 17 include: Becky for order entry, Jan does billing, Germaine does one time paper distribution, one summer position is filled to assit with coop.
    • Inclusion of all ESU staff is encouraged for the NCA accreditation process. Discussion was had concerning student outcomes associated with student performance/outcomes and how this ties to coop.
    • Nebraska ESU Coop may want to participate more as an awareness component rather than being involved with the structure and organization of NCA accreditation.
    • ESU 17 is the fiscal agent for Nebraska ESU Coop.
  • January 4th Meeting
      • Jeff and Geraldine will give an explanation of vision vs. mission statements.
      • Discussion of self-assessment/survey results and how we are going to present this information to the state. Dennis will facilitate this conversation.
      • Departments will meet to discuss individual goals and present this information with the entire staff.
      • Determine as a group if awareness is going to remain a goal for the ESU. Do we need to take this off as a goal and look at another goal that is more learning based. To get us more inline with the expectations of NCA accreditation.
